This
large genus, covering some 650 species of everg reen or deciduous
herbs, shrubs and trees, comes from the tropical and subtropical
regions of the world. The stalkless leaves, often red tinted when
young, are arranged in two flattened ranks along the branches giving
the impression of pinnate foliage. Small, red or yellow-green
petal-less flowers appear during spring and summer. Some species
have cladophylls rather than true leaves and these become fringed
with small flowers, creating an unusual effect as if the leaves are
flowering. Although the small pea-sized fruits of most species are
inedible, a few produce gooseberry-like fruits that are palatable if
cooked.
Flowering colors: Green, Red, Yellow
Cultivation: Plant in rich, sandy, well-drained soil with ample
water. They are good seaside plants in hot climates, seaside no
problem.
Propagate from seed or cuttings. |
