Jacobinia pohliana
Jacobinia carnea
This handsome, evergreen shrub bears dense, erect spikes of white,
pink or rose purple flowers in summer to fall (autumn). It grows to
a height of 5 ft (1.5 m) with a spread of 30 in (75 cm), and has
pointed, veined, deep green leaves. It is frost tender; potted
specimens need to be watered freely in full growth, less so at other
times. Prune back hard in early spring to encourage branching.
Caterpillars and snails can be a problem.
Hardiness zone from 10 To 12
Cultivation : Most species are frost tender. They prefer
well-drained soils in full sun or bright filtered light. They
require shelter from the wind as many species have somewhat brittle
stems. Plants can be kept neat and bushy by pinching out the growing
tips. They are easily propagated from cuttings of non-flowering
shoots taken in spring. |
