Dendrobium crumenatum
This dendrobium species produces very fragrant, beautiful white
flowers with a yellow throat.
These will bloom off and on through out the year. Easy culture, no
rest period required.
The well known 'Pigeon Orchid'. White or greenish flowers, sometimes
pink. Has an unusual blooming habit. It flowers in response to a
sudden drop in temperature. If the temperature drops by 10F, the
plants will bloom in exactly 9 days. . In nature this happens with
the summer rains.Growing from sea level to an altitude of 500 meters
.It occurs in south east asia.
The stems are slender, fascicled, smooth, elongated, up to 1 meter
in length, with pseudobulbs at the base which are 8 to 12
centimeters long, and about 2 centimeters thick. The leaves are
scattered, distichous, oblong, 5 to 8 centimeters long, and 1.5 to
2.5 centimeters wide, with blunt tip. The white flowers are
fugaceous, very fragrant, solitary or somewhat fascicled, appearing
on the upper parts of the stems at the nodes; the center of the lip
is pale yellow, and 2.5 to 3 centimeters long.
The fibers from the stems are used as decorative materials for
baskets .
The Malays commonly use the juice of the pseudobulbs for treating
ears. The ear is also poulticed with the plant. The Malays poultice
boils and pimples with pounded leaves. In Java the same treatment is
used.
