Family: Solanaceae
Potato vine
Origin: South America
vine or creeper, full sun, semi-shade, moderate water,
blue/lavender/purple flowers, irritating thorny or spiny, attracts
butterflies, hummingbirds, subtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F
for a short time.
This woody vine has large heads of dark mauve flowers and round
yellow fruit. Very ornamental, not invasive, but a fast grower.
Thorny. The Solanum family is very large, consisting of nearly 1500
species ranging from vegetables like the potato and aubergine, to
ornamental shrubs and climbers, plus a number of weeds. Some, as
their common name Nightshade suggests, are toxic and need careful
handling. |
