 This
palm seldom reaches more than 6 ft (1.8 m) high, but it is topped by
a vase-shaped crown of large fronds up to about 12 ft (3.5 m) long
with elegantly recurved tips and very narrow leaflets arranged in 2
regular rows. The lowest leaflets are extended into long,
thread-like appendages that hang down to the ground. The broad frond
bases are clothed in thick, blue-gray felt with rusty tinges, and
the fronds are also a pale grayish green.
Cultivation: These palms require a tropical or subtropical climate
free of frost, but have proved surprisingly hardy under dry or
exposed conditions as long as the roots are well watered. Plant in
full sun in rich soil and provide plenty of water. Propagation is
only possible from seed. |
